Does the placement of the light within the frame matter?
Yes! Generally, placing the light in the center of the frame reduces the risk of breaking the light.
If you want a lantern-style 360-degree work light, then the LEDs don’t have to be in the center, but the frame has to be very durable.
Are work lights waterproof?
Some work lights must be waterproof. Some of the best lights actually have the rating of IP67, which allows for a full submersion for 30 minutes at a time.
Some IP ratings that Goldmore offers include IP65. For more information, contact our team!
What other features should I look for when requesting LED work lights for harsh environments?
Apart from waterproof ratings, you should pay attention to dustproof ratings, resistance to falls, resistance to being crushed, resistance to cold, and to chemicals.
Some design features you could consider are rugged ‘O’ rings and gaskets, which protect against moisture ingress.
Also, thicker enclosures and bolting around the gaskets help seal the light.
Another small feature is a two-way permeable vent that allows vapor to move around, but not water.
Vapour can help with heat dissipation.
If the light is waterproof, chances are that is it also fully dustproof.
For impacts, sturdier materials, rugged design, and metal frames/cages will help.
Resistance to cold should be considered not for the light, but for the battery.
If the light is to be used in cold environments, thena traditional plug and cord would be best since no battery will be drained.
Some industries handle various chemicals in the factories and in general.
Thus, the light should be able to withstand an accidental splash or other contacts with the chemicals.
ABS plastic and stainless steel are the best materials to shield against chemicals – acids, corrosives, etc.

What are some body designs and what is each useful for?
In terms of shapes, there are a circular, triangular, rectangular, cylindrical, rod, and other shapes.
Circular work lights can also be donut-shaped, so with a hole in the middle.
Both of these are used when cars are concerned.
So, during road work, in garages, workshops, even when driving through fog.
Circular lights have wide and uniform beam angles.
Ring lights provide the best lighting, especially for cameras, so they are great for car workers that try to record tutorials or case studies of cars.
Circular lights can also be designed without a base, but like a car wheel, which is interesting, but not as practical.
The triangular design is great because it usually incorporates a triangle of red light, which is used as a warning sign.
This is great for any type of construction work and road work since it can both light up the needed area and warn others of construction dangers.
Rectangular work lights are the most standard ones.
They can be used for anything, including driving.
They provide a good floodlight range and are versatile.
Cylindrical lights are compact.
There are many different cylinder designs.
They are comfortable to hold and maneuver since they sit in the hand like a flashlight or a microphone.
Rod-shaped work lights are mainly used to fix cars.
hey called the underhood working lights and they provide a uniform strip of lights.
Some other designs are for compact work lights.
They can look like remotes, pen lights, and small rectangular lights.
All of these are great for more hands-on work like fixing the wiring or working on the car.

What are some leg/base designs?
In terms of legs, there could be tripods, legs, and handles that double as legs.
Tripods let the user mount the work light at a higher level and aim it at a high landing, such as during construction.
These allow the light to be put at any level as well.
They are also very stable.
General legs could be plastic or metal, and they can be thick or thin.
However, thin foldable legs are not sturdy and stable enough for more heavy-duty working environments.
Thick non-foldable legs are more sturdy, but also slightly more difficult to stored.
The legs could also let the body of the light swing into any angle necessary.
These are usually plastic with some rubber, and they are thick.
Then, there also also handles that double as legs.
This makes the light versatile, stable, and more compact.
However, flipping the light to change the handle into a leg could be fiddly.
For bases, they are free-standing and can either have a landing or not.
Bases without landings just follow the shape of the light, such as with circular lights that can roll around.
These can be more portable and specialized for a certain purpose.
Bases with landings have a flat surface that the light can rest on.
It is a stable base and can suit any purpose.
Finally, there are magnetic bases and legs that allow the light to be attached to any metal surface, such as a road sign or the hood of a car.
This gives the user freedom to attach it almost anywhere for ease of use.
Within magnetic bases, there is also a magnetic joint base. It has a rolling joint that can be fixed at any angle.
Plus, the magnetic base makes this type of light even more adjustable to any setting.
However, these could only work with smaller LED work lights.
How could handles be designed?
Work lights can have carrying handles or holding handles, or no handles at all.
Carrying handles may be rotating or fixed, and either one is good for different purposes.
Rotating handles make the light more adjustable and can double as legs.
Fixed handles are sturdier and provide more control.
Thus, individual workers might find rotating handles better, whereas construction groups would be satisfied with fixed handles.
Holding handles are for lights that are rectangular or cylindrical in shape.
These just have grooves where the user’s fingers go.
These provide a lot of manual control over the light and are intuitive to hold.
However, this only works with smaller lights.
Are there hooks/clips available as well?
There are various hooks and clips.
The most used hook design resembles a hanger, and is useful for hanging the light anywhere.
Also, there are clamps that attach to branches, poles, bars, tabletops, fences, and more.
These clamps can either go on the top or on the bottom, depending on what the light is for.
If the work light needs to be placed somewhere high, then the top clamp is better.
But if the light needs to be placed somewhere low, then the bottom clamp is better.
Should the LED work light rotate?
Small lights don’t have to be able to rotate, but bigger and more heavy-duty ones should.
Especially the lights that have legs should be flexible.
You can make them rotate 180 degrees, as well as a full 360 degrees.
It is also worthwhile to think about vertical rotation since adjusting the light up or down would be very useful for workers and will increase the light’s versatility.
Small lights can also be made to rotate or change the angle of the head.
A popular solution for this is a flip-out light.
Also, be aware that some rotation should not be designed for, such as spinning the light vertically.
Heatsink fins function best if they are vertical instead of horizontal, and heatsinks are crucial for LED lights.
In terms of optics, what is better for work lights: lenses or reflectors?
Lenses are generally preferred over reflectors because lenses focus the light into a single directional beam, which is what work lights need to do.
Reflectors diffuse the light, making it resemble a traditional luminaire. With work lights, that creates glare.
What lumen output should an LED work light have?
Generally, you should have 130-150 lumens per square foot of working space.
So, work lights need to be very bright.
What beam angle is necessary for work lights?
This depends on the type of work they are for.
If they are for a hands-on individual that wires homes or fixes cars, then the beam angle should be narrow to provide very focused and concentrated light.
Typically, the angle of such beams would be 4 to 19 degrees.
This is called a spotlight.
If your clientele consists of groups of workers and the light will be used for general lighting such as on road work or construction sites, then the beam angle should be wide – anywhere from 36 to 120 degrees.
This is called a floodlight.
You could request a 360-degree light, but these aren’t used as work lights since work lights need to be directional and bright.
If you do want a more dispersed light, check out our camping lanterns.
Should there be colored light included?
Besides white light, you could also include yellow, orange, red, or blue light.
Yellow is easier on the eyes and is also a good warning light that can be used during road work.
Orange is also a good warning color.
It is also one of the best to cut through the fog, which is great during rainy evenings of construction work.
Red light is yet another signalling light, as well as an SOS color.
This one is very important and most work lights have it.
If you just want to include one color besides white, then red is the way to go.
Blue light can be included for small pen lights that one individual would use.
Blue is great for reading various maps and plans, so you can sell these to construction workers, wiring specialists, and anyone else who needs to read maps in the dark.
What color temperatures are better to use?
Some of the best LED work lights have color temperatures of 5000K to 6000K.
This is normal daylight white lights, which is cool-toned and bright.
However, you can go lower than that for warmer white light.
Also, you can include a 3000K light mode, which will give off yellow-white light, which less tiring for the eyes.
Thus, the worker(s) can take a break with this color temperature.
Don’t go higher than 6000K because then the light will be too harsh to look at.
What light modes are there?
Some light modes can include high, low, floodlight, blue, red, flash, SOS strobe.
High and low modes regulate the brightness.
During early evenings or starry nights, a low mode would be sufficient.
At other times, the high mode is great.
Floodlight mode widens the beam angle to light up a bigger area.
Having this mode makes the light versatile since it has a concentrated beam and a wide one.
Blue or red modes can be used for different purposes, such as reading a map or signalling.
A flash mode can be used as a warning, whereas SOS strobe is a clear help call.
Both of these modes are essential for more hazardous industries like road work, construction, or factory work.
What color of light is best for bad weather conditions?
Yellow or orange light is best for fog, snow, and rain because moisture reflects cool light like blue better than warm light like orange.
Since the light is not reflected, it can travel farther and have less glare.
This is also why red and orange are good emergency colors – they are visible even in bad weather.
This is why street lights and cars’ fog lights are yellow or orange.
What is SMD and COB?
SMD and COB are both LED mounting technologies.
SMD stands for surface-mounted and it consists of many LEDs mounted close together.
This type of light is bright and gives a lot of control over the pattern and color of light.
COB stands for chip-on-board.
These look like continuous yellow strips that light up.
A COB module consists of a lot of very small LEDs that are put together very densely.
COB lights are the brightest and provide the widest beam angles, so they are popular with work lights.
What options are there for lens covers?
There are several types of lens covers: those that change the color of light, those that diffuse or sharpen the light, and those that protect the surface.
Lens covers that change the color include amber and red covers.
If these are included, then the light itself doesn’t need color modes.
However, if these plastic covers crack, they will change the pattern and beam of light.
Covers that diffuse the light are matte and cloudy, and they can be used to soften the light.
There is an accessory to work lights that looks like a plastic or metal cage.
It is used to protect the light from falls and other impacts so it doesn’t shatter.
These are great for industries where accidents can happen, such as on the side of the road or in a factory.
Finally, some lens covers provide an non-marring surface or one that is resistant to impact.
These final covers are very useful for work environments.
How do LED work lights charge?
LED work lights can be charged through a USB, a cord, or a solar panel.
USB charging is good for smaller lights that don’t need to run for very long times.
The USB can be a regular one or different types of micro-USB such as what Apple offers.
Charging a light through a solar panel is efficient only in places where there is lots of sunlight.
Otherwise, the light will die very quickly.
The most popular charging solution is with a traditional cord and plug.
This method is resistant to cold since there is no battery to be drained.
It also provides bright light for a very long time.
However, accessibility to outlets and the length of the cord are important limiting factors.
How long do work lights last on one charge?
Work lights can last from 6 to 12 hours on one charge depending on the battery, lumen output, and external temperature.
Overall, these lights typically last up to 100 000 hours.
Are there specialized alarm lights?
Besides the SOS light mode and the triangular red stripe, there is another light specialized for warnings.
These are impact-resistant, crushproof, and waterproof.
For versatility, they have a magnetic base and a foldable hook.
With that, they can be used for traffic control, emergency beacon, and other such situations.
These lights are important in any industry and application.
Also, circular lights can be used as emergency lights as well.
What is a trouble light?
A trouble light can also be called a rough service light, an inspection light, or a drop light.
They are used to illuminate obscure and dangerous places such as sites of construction accidents, various tunnels and tubes, petrochemical plants, etc.
They have a protective metal cage around the light, a hook, a sturdy handle, and a long cord that it can be suspended from.
These lights are designed to withstand lots of abuse, impacts, and are somewhat protected against fire.
What industries can LED work lights be marketed to?
LED work lights are very versatile.
However, they find their applications in the mining, agriculture, automotive, forestry, emergency, and construction industries.
Each of these may need a specialized light.
Mining and construction lights need to be durable and very bright.
Agriculture and forestry lights need versatility, floodlight options, and durability.
Automotive industry may need some special shapes, like circular and rod lights.
Emergency industry needs very durable lights that are bright and versatile.
They also must have different color options for any situation.
